Thrift store shopping has become increasingly popular over the years till the present day, offering a budget-friendly and sustainable way to refresh your wardrobe or furnish your home. However, for newcomers to the world of secondhand shopping, navigating the aisles of a thrift store and finding hidden gems can be overwhelming. This beginner's guide aims to provide tips and tricks on how to thrift store shop like a pro, from how to spot quality items to mastering the art of haggling. Whether you're a seasonal thrifter or a first-time bargain hunter, this guide will help you make the most of your thrift store shopping experience.

#1 | Where to thrift?

Thrift stores, vintage stores, and flea markets are all great places to find unique and affordable clothing and decor.

  • Thrift stores → offer a wide selection of gently used items at discounted prices.

  • Vintage stores → specialize in retro and one-of-a-kind pieces.

  • Flea markets → perfect for hunting down rare finds and hidden gems.

Not only budget-friendly but also environmentally friendly, as they promote recycling and upcycling.

*Pro tips*

  • Shop on weekdays – you’ll have a better chance at seeing all the new clothes that come in before they are sorted onto the clothing racks.

  • If it doesn’t fit, leave it – there may be another person who could benefit from finding an item in their size.

Leaving it behind, you are giving someone else the opportunity to discover and use it, rather than taking it and leaving it unused in your closet.

#2 | How to find actual cute stuff

Take your timenarrow down your clothing options by color and materials

#3 | Materials *TRY* Looking for:

  • Silk

  • Corduroy

  • Lace

  • Cotton

  • Denim (100% cotton)

These kinds of fabrics age better, feel better on skin, and almost look more high-end.

#4 | Materials try to *AVOID* looking for and why:

  • Polyester - due to the unbreathable material for the skin, it can trap sweat and contribute to body odor. This can be especially problematic in warmer weather climates.

  • Acrylic knits - over time the material starts to become scratchier.

  • Suede that needs cleaning - Spending over hundreds of dollars to have professionals clean suede is not worth a single penny.

When it comes to thrift flipping, being willing to alter clothing can truly make a difference in the final result. The perfect thrifted piece may not fit quite right or have some features that could be improved upon. By being open to making alterations, you can really unleash your creativity and transform a mediocre find into a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. Whether it's sewing in a new waistline, changing the length of a hem, or even adding embellishments or patches, the possibilities are endless when it comes to altering thrifted clothing. So next time you're out hunting for thrifted treasures, don't be afraid to think outside the box and consider how a little alteration could take your find to the next level.

List of *EASY* clothes to alter:

  • Men’s Quarter: zips, sweaters, or hoodies - easily can be made into crop tops

  • Midi or Pencil skirts - hem into mini skirt

  • Plaid 80s blazers - remove shoulder pads for a modern silhouette look

  • High-waisted jeans - cut the bottom of the jeans to make shorts

  • Plain tee shirts - add any embroidery design or patches

Colors & patterns I personally look for in clothing:

  • Black & White

  • Beige/Khaki

  • Blue: navy, light, etc.

  • Mean Girls pink

  • Pastels: baby blue, soft pink, jade green, butter yellow, & lavender purple

  • Vintage florals

  • Sequin/sparkle

  • Polka dots

  • Stripes (optional)
